i am not -and have never been- one to discuss current events or contemporary issues (national or international) -at least not via means of my blog. my inclination to stick to topics of a more personal nature, ones which are applicable to my everyday ins and outs, has to do with the fact that those are simply the concerns with which i am most comfortable.
however, the recent devastation which has struck the haitian people is something literally impossible to ignore or avoid coming into contact with. the media is absolutely all over the story with article after article from every possible angle and more. which, don't get me wrong, is not a bad thing. with certain issues, media can be a not-bad thing. and i really do think it's highly positive and just as helpful to promote awareness and encourage whatever help, relief or support from those who can.
unfortunately, with the hope for haiti concert, the states have managed to -yet again- outdo us, mere canadians. but -being in light of the the good cause that it is -they can take the prize...this time.
anyway, my acknowledgment of what is currently taking place in haiti -if justification were actually required- is basically my indirect attempt to understanding why things like this happen to those of us who were neither prepared, nor cannot, by any means, afford to endure such utter destruction. not that i would wish something like this upon any person, nation or civilization -but, in all honesty, us north americans are much more well-equipped to deal with the aftermath of something so detrimental.
so why not us? science and explanation aside, does the world's functionality essentially rely on a series of ironies? and is this all, ultimately, a really, really twisted case of murphy's law?
