it's incredibly hard to believe that we met over three years ago. i hadn't been exactly fully aware of just how much time had passed between our first encounters and now. and that we are, in fact, three years older than we were that summer...and only two years short of that 5-year mark that constantly hung over our heads. i suppose it just sorta hit me all at once realizing that our first emails are from the june of 2006.
and i'm not gonna lie..reading through them, it kinda freaked me out. it's incredible just how different we were back then. there was an innocence to us that we won't ever get back. but at the same time, it was like digging up treasure. i presume it's like the feeling you'd get by finding your mother's old diary and reading about this grand summer romance she once had which managed to completely sweep her off her feet with some boy you've never even heard her mention. and finding yourself entirely consumed in this epic love story, you can't help but wonder what ever happened to them.
and while you get carried away in your attempt to try to imagine what it would be like to be in love with someone the way people are in love letters....you realize that those love letters belong to you. and that you once meant every single word you wrote...and what you now can only begin to imagine ever having was something you, in fact, used to have.
and although we do our best to keep pressing on and moving forward, the past always succeeds in somehow holding us back.
it's just funny how life works.
